Tournoi de Power Instinct: Matrimelee - Partie 2, la collecte d'infos

Exceptionnellement, en raison de son contenu, ce billet sera en anglais.

When I get a little serious about a fighting game, I always try to collect as much information about it as I can. It happens Matrimelee isn't quite the most documented game on the internet. Actually, there would be little about it if it weren't for one guy, "Royshark", whom I met on the Fightcade Matrimelee lobby.

Roy animates the "Matrimelee Revival Project": a Discord channel, a wiki dedicated to the game, weekly tournaments streamed on Twitch, plenty of Youtube "how to" videos... So I think it is safe to say that if you're looking for in-depth information about the game, Roy's the man. He kindly accepted to answer some very general questions about the game, which I hope will make you curious about it.

J16B: What is your history with Power Instinct - Matrimelee?

Roy: I didn't know about the Power instinct franchise until someone named Ious showed me Matrimelee. Had a little falling out with the dude over some games he lost and I didn't play it for a while. After a year or so, I got booted out of the JoJo's HFTF community for some accusations of joining new player tournaments and started up the Matrimelee Revival.

Compared to other retro 2D fighting games, what does Matrimelee play like?

Matrimelee is like King of Fighters with more mechanics.

What are some of the mechanical quirks in Matrimelee that make it stand out among the games of that era?

Matrimelee has a lot of deep, hidden mechanics that are borrowed from other games. For instance, Matrimelee has something simmilar to Guilty Gear's GUTS mechanic. The less health you have the more damage you take. This isn't the only mechanic that seems to be borrowed from other games. CPS1 chains also exist in Matrimelee, allowing for some crazy difficult combos to be done.

What is most important to master in order to become a good Matrimelee player?

Matrimelee is a neutral heavy game. The higher you go up on the tier list, the more characters can play neutral effectively. It's very important to understand, master and recognize neutral play.

What do you like most about Matrimelee? The least?

I like White's level 2 command grab the most. He takes you to the moon. I don't like Clara. She can kill you with two meter and has full screen unblockables.

How do I know if it is a game for me or not?

Matrimelee is a game that shouldn't be taken serious. It's origins is a collection of stereotype parodies. Like you got the Ryu wandering warrior parody, Reiji who does nothing but exist for fighting. If you like neutral based gameplay, a lot of in-depth mechanics and some cool characters I think you will like Matrimelee.

When talking about game and character balance, players like to call fighting games "broken". Just how broken is Matrimelee?

Matrimelee is pretty well balanced. Only Clara and Jones are pretty busted. As I said before, Clara can kill you with two meter and has full screen unblockables. Jones is just seriously plus on everything with great normals, unscaled unblockable setups and massive basic combo damage. Beyond those two characters, everyone is pretty well balanced.

Are there any glitches or other weirdness that you know of?

There are some glitches regarding Olof's level 2 "Super Punch". It's a really odd super, if you jump in the middle of Olof while he's doing it you'll get teleported to the other side of the screen. Here's a video about it

Who are your favorite characters, and why?

I like the entire cast of Matrimelee. But if I had to pick one, I'd pick White. Even though he's super low tier and slow. He hits like a freight train, kicks buffalos at you, summons a totem pole out of the ground and also command grabs you to the moon. I don't think it gets any better than that.

Matrimelee is the 2nd fighting game developed by Noise Factory, the first one being Rage of the Dragons. How do the two games compare, which do you prefer and why?

Rage of the Dragons is vastly different compared to Matrimelee. ROTD is like King of Fighters x Marvel vs Capcom. ROTD is a two team tag game with tag-in mechanics, breakable walls that can be used to combo and the highly unique First Impact attack (CD) that launches the opponent into the air and gives you 5 inputs to do to extend a combo. Matrimelee has none of those. It's a 1v1 fighting game that has Blowback tied to the CD attack instead of a First Impact. I honestly like both games. But if I had to pick one, I'd play Matrimelee. I just prefer one on one fighting games more than tag games.
